Dr. Jean Peters-Do, M.D.

Jean combines the current technologies of western science and modern medical knowledge with key healing and contemplative methods in her practice. Integrating these methods in a personal and gentle way, her practice is based on her desire to bring more compassion into the world through the healing arts. Her meditation training and study of the contemplative sciences of Tibetan Buddhism bring precision and clarity to her natural intuitive abilities and communication skills. Jean currently practices urgent care medicine in Austin and is now offering consultation services at Excelon Health.

She explains: “My mission is to help as many people as possible to connect with and activate their own healing: to awaken to their true potential; to live as the unique and sacred beings that they are and thus to bring to the world their special gifts; and to bring healing and balance into our troubled world in this way.

It is difficult to live in our modern world. There are many stressors to deal with, not the least of which is the fast pace of our American culture. What we don’t have to contend with in the form of basic needs like food and shelter is replaced by cultural and lifestyle demands for us to out perform, out produce, and out spend ourselves in terms of our physical, mental, and emotional capacities. On top of that, there is the threat that our very planet, our ecosystem, is in danger of collapse. All beings share this collective anxiety about the well-being of the world, but what can we do?

We must recognize that to change the world, to heal it and make it a better place, we must start with our own hearts and minds, and thus also our bodies. If our bodies are not well, we will not have the ability to work with our minds. If we don’t work with our minds, we won’t be able to fully uncover and activate our inner most essence. It is that essence of who and what we truly are that is the key to health and well being. When we restore the balance of our mind-body-spirit axis and tune them to optimal function, not only will we feel better, but we will be able to effectively be in the world and contribute to it our special-ness, which is unique to each of us, and thus help heal the world.

My approach for helping an individual “restore intrinsic health” is to start with the basics and include common sense and practical advice. My patients and I get to know one another during a 45 minute to one hour intensive interview covering these topics:

  • medical history and current physical condition
  • social history and current personal environment
  • spiritual beliefs, how you arrived at them, and how you cultivate them
  • personal strengths and weaknesses, goals and wildest dreams
  • anything else that might spontaneously be revealed

Together we develop a treatment plan during the interview, prioritizing issues in terms of urgency and significance. The plan may focus on a physical condition, an emotional state, or on a spiritual aspect – whatever area needs the most attention in order to achieve a rebalanced state. This collaborative process results in a prioritized list of issues and ways to address those issues in a practical period of time.

Following the interventional interview, I will perform an acupuncture treatment aimed at touching the deeper psycho-spiritual mechanisms of the mind-body. For those who are not comfortable with needles, a form of healing touch will be used to assist in the opening of psycho-physical blockages. Almost all of my treatments include the use of botanical essential oils and foot massage. Sometimes moxabustion is incorporated, as well.

Depending on the immediate results of the treatment, a specific plan for follow up visits and in between visit activities will be drafted. Follow up visits may be scheduled at one week to six week intervals, depending on the acuity of the presenting problem and overall goals of treatment. These visits will last for one hour and will include a history, evaluation of progress, treatment, and review/update of the plan of care. In between visit activities will be developed based on one’s current health and wellness activities.”
